Abstract:Aim:Takayasuarteritis(TA)isassociatedwithincreasedcardiovascularmorbidityandmortality,andthedegreeofarterialstiffnessisanindependentpredictorofcardiovascularmortalityinavarietyofdiseases.Inaddition,thelevelsofN-terminalpro-brainnatriureticpeptide(NT-proBNP),amarkerofventriculardysfunction,havebeenfoundtobehigherinpatientswithTAthaninhealthycontrols.Inthisstudy,weaimedtoinvestigatetherelationshipbetweentheplasmaNT-proBNPlevelsandarterialstiffnessinpatientswithTA.Methods:Seventy-twopatientswithTAwererecruitedinthisstudy.TheparticipantswereanalyzedwithrespecttotheNT-proBNPlevels,cardiovascularriskfactors,TA-relatedvariablesandarterialstiffnessassessedaccordingtothebrachial-anklepulsewavevelocity(baPWV).ThepatientsweredividedintotwogroupsbasedonthemeanbaPWV,andtheassociationbetweentheNT-proBNPandbaPWVvalueswastestedusinguni-andmultivariateanalyses.Results:Twenty-fourpatients(33.3%)wereclassifiedintothehigh-baPWVgroup.Thebodymassindex(p=0.),systolicbloodpressure(p＜0.),diastolicbloodpressure(p=0.),meanbloodpressure(p＜0.),plasmaNT-proBNPlevels(p=0.)andtotalcholesterollevels(p=0.)weresignificantlyhigherinthehigh-baPWVgroupthaninthelow-baPWVgroup.Astepwisemultiplelinearregressionanalysisrevealedthemeanbloodpressure(p＜0.),age(p=0.),andNT-proBNPlevel(p=0.)tobeindependentdeterminantsoftheba-PWVafteradjustingforotherconfoundingfactors.Conclusions:TheplasmaNT-proBNPlevelsareindependentlyassociatedwiththedegreeofarterialstiffnessmeasuredaccordingtothebaPWVinpatientswithTA.
